Jiangsu Kaichen Power Equipment Co., Ltd., leveraging its technical accumulation and innovative strength in the generator field, has successfully built a 12MW standalone power station for a major copper mine in Central Africa. Located in a remote area, hundreds of kilometers away from the nearest infrastructure, the copper mine faces extremely harsh power supply conditions. The complete absence of grid connection means the power station must undertake 24/7 uninterrupted power supply, supporting the entire process including mining, mineral processing, laboratory operations, and employee living areas. Meanwhile, the extreme environment of high temperature, high humidity, and pervasive dust in the mining area imposes far higher requirements on the weather resistance and dustproof performance of power generation equipment than conventional standards. More critically, diesel fuel needs to be transported to the mining area over long distances, resulting in high logistics costs. Fuel economy is directly related to the mine's operational efficiency, becoming a core pain point that the project urgently needs to address.
To address these complex challenges, Jiangsu Kaichen abandoned the "one-size-fits-all" standardized products and tailored a complete turnkey power station solution. The core power comes from six high-performance KC-2000GF 2MW diesel generator sets. To adapt to the harsh mining environment, each unit is mounted in a custom-designed 40-foot sound-attenuated and weather-proof container. This modular design can be called a "mobile power fortress": the container is made of high-strength materials, effectively blocking abrasive dust from eroding the engine and avoiding premature wear of core components; it is equipped with a heavy-duty ventilation and cooling system, which can maintain stable operation of the unit even in high-temperature environments; at the same time, it significantly reduces noise emissions, creating a safer and more comfortable working environment for on-site personnel. "Skilled workers are scarce in remote areas. The modular design greatly simplifies the on-site installation process, realizing 'plug-and-play'. The deployment and commissioning of the entire system were completed in just a few weeks, which is unimaginable in traditional power station projects," said Mr. Liu, Head of the Special Projects Engineering Department of Jiangsu Kaichen.
The most innovative breakthrough of the project lies in the integrated application of the intelligent fuel management system. Considering the high cost of fuel transportation, the engineering team of Jiangsu Kaichen developed a dynamic load management system to realize real-time synchronization between the six units and the mine's variable power demand. During low-load scenarios such as shift changes and non-production hours, the system automatically reduces the number of operating units, allowing a small number of units to operate at a higher and more efficient load factor instead of multiple units idling at low load. This intelligent regulation strategy has achieved a measured 15% reduction in fuel consumption, directly translating into a significant decrease in the mine's processing cost per ton of ore. In addition, Kaichen designed and installed a large fuel farm with double-walled storage tanks and an automated fuel polishing and transfer system, ensuring that the fuel entering the engine always maintains optimal quality, which not only extends the service life of the units but also further improves power supply reliability. "For mine customers, fuel savings bring tangible economic benefits, which is also one of their core performance indicators. Our solution not only solves the problem of 'being able to supply power' but also meets the in-depth needs of 'cost-saving and long-term stability'," said Ms. Li, the project manager.
To ensure the success of the project, Jiangsu Kaichen dispatched a core team of veteran commissioning engineers who were stationed on-site for two months. The team not only supervised the final installation and conducted rigorous performance tests under simulated load conditions but also provided comprehensive training for the mine's maintenance personnel, covering everything from routine maintenance procedures to advanced diagnostic technologies based on the integrated control system, ensuring that the local team can independently complete equipment operation and maintenance. Today, this power station has achieved highly autonomous and reliable operation, providing continuous power for the mine's giant crushers, conveyor belts, high-tech laboratories, and living facilities. The mine's management reported that since the commissioning of the Kaichen power station, the equipment uptime has increased significantly, completely eliminating the production shutdowns caused by power outages in the past.
